Early discussions of objects and transformation

  1. We have been discussing what it means to observe and capture images of objects and things. Much of this has to do with what we can 'see' - and what the various processes of doing so actually are. In trying to break apart what we construct for ourselves as images and objects we have looked into the means with which we gather information: the tools that have been created to this end, and into what happens when something is transformed; whether it is a 3-dimensional object (into 2-dimensions) or an electron beam that transmits an image (from a 3-dimensional surface)in seemingly precise detail, or a piece of paper - that becomes an artifact of representational and cultural significance.

  2. I am reminded of presentation I heard from Edward Tufte a few years ago. He said "the nerves of the brain begin at the eye, and so 'seeing' is the beginning of 'thinking'"
